Exams that earn credit at Texas A&M

Texas A&M University Rules and Regulations

- 8.6.4 A student may not have credit posted for credit by examination for courses in which he or she is currently registered or has acquired a grade at Texas A&M other than Q, W, or NG.
- 8.6.10 Students may not receive credit by examination for courses that are prerequisites to courses for which they already have credit except with the approval of the department authorizing the exam.

Exams Offered
We administer and proctor any and all CLEP exams but Texas A&M will not accept credit for all exams.

Please see the list above for the only exams that Texas A&M will accept credit for.

What about Foreign Language Credit?
Texas A&M University can accept credit for a foreign language if taken through FLATS at BYU.
After purchasing the test, it can be sent to our location and you will need to schedule a day and time with us and pay the proctoring fee.

Eligibility for Credit by Examination
• Students may not receive CLEP credit for courses that are prerequisites to courses for which they already have credit except with the approval of the department authorizing the examination. (Student Rule 8.6.10)
• Students may not have credit posted for Credit by examination for a course in which he or she is currently registered or has acquired a grade other than Q, WP, or NG. (Student Rule 8.6.4)
• Students who previously excluded a course grade under the Freshman Grade Exclusion Policy are not eligible to receive CLEP credit for that course 
How to Register
CollegeBoard.org 

Prior to scheduling, you must create an account at CollegeBoard.org and purchase the CLEP exam you wish to take.

You will receive a voucher with a ticket number that you must bring to the test center on the day of the exam in order for staff to access your exam. 

Once you have completed the form and purchased the exam, call our office at (979) 845-0532 to schedule a date and time. 

We test Monday - Friday at:
  • 9:00 am 
  • 11:00 am 
  • 2:00 pm 
Our offices conclude testing everyday at 3:45pm.

Please have a preferred date and time ready when registering.
Fees
The CLEP exam fee on collegeboard.org is $97.00

TAMU students: The non-refundable registration fee is $35.00

Non-TAMU students: The non-refundable registration fee is $50.00

All fees are due at the time of registration and are non-refundable

The Day of Your Exam

What To Bring:


You need to arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled test session with an unexpired government issued ID containing a photo and signature:
  • Driver's License
  • Passport
  • Texas Department of Public Safety Identification Card
  • Current Permanent Residence Card

A student ID is NOT an acceptable ID for this test.

If a minor is testing, a Parental Release Form will need to be signed and a parent or legal guardian is required to accompany the student.
Whoever accompanies the student will also have to present a valid ID from the list above.

You will also need to bring your ticket from CollegeBoard.

Without an acceptable ID and your PRINTED TICKET from CollegeBoard, you will not be permitted to test. 

What To Expect:


Upon arrival, you will present your ID to the proctor. They will confirm the exam that you are taking and will assign you a locker with a lock and key where you will store all your belongings. 
You will be asked to empty your pockets and take off all jewelry. 
What jewelry will be asked to be removed?

No outside jackets are allowed but you can take a thin or light jacket into the testing room. No hats or scarves allowed.

You will go through a security check and will be asked to show your arms and legs. You will be asked to turn pockets inside out so be aware that clothing with numerous pockets will cause a longer check-in process.

You will be informed of the rules of your exam and given scratch paper and pencils if needed. Once seated, a proctor monitors the testing room at all times. Once seated, a proctor monitors the testing room at all times. 

After Your Exam:


You will receive an unofficial score report. Official scores will post to your student record approximately two to four weeks from your exam date.

To claim credit: 

Log in to the Howdy portal at howdy.tamu.edu using your NetID and password. "Search 'Credit by Examination' in the search bar located at the top of the page. Follow the link labeled Credit by Examination to access the instructions for claiming credit. 

FAQ's

 

If you see your credit but it is not allowing you to accept it:

Undergraduate Students: You may be enrolled or registered for the class you are trying to accept credit for. You will need to drop the class and then email our office at testing@tamu.edu with your name, UIN, and what credit you want accepted.

Graduate Students: Full-time Graduate Students are not eligible for CLEP credit. You will not be able to accept the credit. You will need to email our office at testing@tamu.edu with your name and UIN for questions.

If you need accommodations:

We will need the paperwork for your accommodation before you can test. Let us know when you register for your exam and send your paperwork to testing@tamu.edu. Unfortunately, we cannot supply readers or privacy rooms at this time.
